Spanning more than 8,000 acres, this spectacular mansion has kept its original flair since it opened to the public over a century ago. There are breathtaking gardens, a winery with tasting, a delightful gift shop and a dairy with scrumptious ice cream and much more. There is much fun to be had in them there hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. If the natural beauty of the mountains is not enough to keep you busy with sightseeing, then check out all there is to do at The Cradle of Forestry. There are guided tours, restored historic buildings, exhibits, a gift shop and more. Kids will certainly enjoy seeing the restored locomotive and wandering the forest. The Farmer's Market lets consumers purchase fresh products in bulk or in single items. The retail area houses individual businesses offering fruit and vegetables by the pound, mountain crafts, jams, jellies, honey and preserves and more. In the open-air truck sheds, customers can buy in bulk from certified farmers who sell from their trucks or small sheds. You'll find local restaurants purchasing their daily goods as well as local homemakers looking for fruits and vegetables to can. This is also home to Jesse Israel & Sons Garden and Nursery Center. The river is calling. French Broad Rafting Company offers river sports for all ages and all levels of water experience. If you're after thrills, go on one of the whitewater excursions. There are two levels: calm water (an introduction) and faster rapids. Both offer an experienced guide to lead and all equipment and refreshments are provided. Trips last 3 to 4 hours. Canoes, funkyaks and rafts are available to rent and use on a calmer section. With no guide, trips last about 3 hours. Call for prices.

Want to try white water rafting? Are you hesitant because you're a beginner? Then here is the opportunity you've been waiting for. Huck Finn Adventures is a small outfitting company that takes special care to make sure rafting trips are safe and fun. Spend a half day (3 hours) or full day (5 hours) rafting down the French Broad River. Float trips, sunset tours and overnighters are also available. Fees range from $35-$125 per adult, $30-$99 for children 15 and under (minimum 8yrs old or 80 lbs).

The Nantahala Outdoor Center is located in Bryson City and offers river trips on six Western North Carolina rivers. Depending upon the river and skill level, trips can be guided or unguided. The levels are introductory, intermediate and experienced with the more experienced rides encountering the roughest rapids. Treks average about 2 1/2 hours. No trip allows children under 8 and some do not allow children under 12. All equipment is provided with rental fee. Reservations are strongly encouraged and you should call for prices and directions.

Kids and adults alike will find Ghost Town to be nothing but fun! It's hard to decide what to do first; country music, The Red Devil Coaster, hourly gunfights on Main Street and the chair lifts are just a few of the things offered up in this town of authentic 1800s replica buildings. Picnic areas are available, but there is also a cafeteria, a pizza shop and an ice cream parlor. Admission for folks 10 and up USD22.95; children age 3-9 USD13.95; children age 2 and under free.

Grandfather Mountain is the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is a truly rustic and fun adventure that includes a swinging bridge that sways a mile above the valley floor. Be sure to bring your camera to capture your treasured experience. There is also a museum filled with history and facts. Open year round, weather permitting. Closed for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

The Vance Monument is one of the best-known pieces of artwork in downtown Asheville. A central landmark for the center of town, Pack Square, the monument is an obelisk that is in honor of the memory of Zebulon B. Vance, a North Carolina Civil War governor and local area native. The monument is also a gathering place for many of Asheville's diverse populations. From "hippie" to "yippie," Vance Monument is a great place to people watch—or to just enjoy the beautiful architecture of nearby buildings.

Madison County is blessed with a variety of creeks and rivers fed by crystal clear mountain springs and bordered by the gorgeous Pisgah National Forest. This is the backdrop enjoyed by those who opt to spend a half or full day floating and fishing or fly fishing creek side. Catch small mouth bass, musky and catfish on a leisurely float trip or more challenging adventure course. Half-day trips are $150. Full-day trips are $300. Cook out facilities and sack lunches are available for an additional charge. Reservations are strongly recommended.
